Simple. That's how I like my foods. Only ketchup and mustard on my cheeseburgers. No tomatoes in my salads. And I only take mustard (sometimes BBQ sauce) on my hotdogs. There's nothing complicated when it comes to my cooking. And that's exactly how this beans and rice recipe is I whipped up earlier this week.
- black beans (canned or dried)
- brown rice
- quinoa (I used a Harmony blend)
- sausage (I used Andouille)
This beans and rice remix is super simple to make and definitely sticks to your bones--perfect for those cold winter nights. The great thing about this recipe remix is that you can switch up the ingredients to your liking! If you don't care for black beans, try pinto. If you want red quinoa, go for it! Chicken sausage instead of Andouille? Be my guest! It's all up to you and your taste buds.
Cook all of the ingredients accordingly and combine to create this awesome and tasty dish! Enjoy!
// John 6:63-69 //
This is what my journaling Bible looks like. It's not covered in oil pastels, water colors, scrapbooking letters or anything else overly crafty. Just pen, pencil and marker.
I can't really remember how I ended up at this scripture but I know it was during a recent fast. I'd never read this before but it stuck with me after reading it.
Quick rundown: So, after all of the other disciples had turned away from Jesus and went about their business twelve decided to stay. Jesus turns and looks at those 12 and says, "Do you want to go away as well?".
I honestly can't even imagine what it would be like to have the living Savior ask if I wanted to leave too. I' wouldn't even be able to move. AT. ALL. I can just seem myself, mouth wide open, staring in awe. Well, luckily the disciples weren't in awe like I would have been! Instead, [Simon] Peter turns to him and answers with something that just clicked when I read it. He said, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life and we have believed, and have come to know that you are the Holy One of God."
Can we just look at the first half of his answer? John 6:68 says, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life." That right there is enough for me. Because let's think about it for a second-- besides the obviousness of salvation, there truly is no one else for us to go to and through to get to our Heavenly Father. So before we go running to everyone but Jesus, let's step back and really ask ourselves who we can rely on. There's no other first responder, national leader, humanitarian, or any other person who can get us to the Father other than Christ Jesus. He's the only one.
So let's not get so caught up in this world, relying on everyone else to protect us, cure us, or care for us. Let's be be like Peter and realize that there is only one to whom we can go to. Only one who has the words of eternal life. The Holy One of God.
It's Tuesday and I've got another style post for you! I love a good baseball cap and a game. Long story short, I got this hat at my first MLB game in Detroit, Michigan. My good friend Aeriel and I bought the tickets on a whim and made our way to the stadium after having lunch across the border in Canada. It was early June, hot as heck, but I had an absolute blast! Our seats gave us a perfect view of Downtown Detroit as well as the entire stadium. Even though the Tigers lost that night, I still really enjoyed myself and will always remember my first major league game.
If I could wear a baseball cap everyday I probably would. Most people throw them on when they're having a bad hair day or a if it's raining but hardly ever as a part of their actual outfit. Baseball caps are more than just a way to show off your school or team pride. They automatically give your outfit a more "undone" or "relaxed" feel to it. For exmple, I've worn the outfit above practically every other day this past Fall and it looks completely different without the hat. But when I add the baseball hat, it gives it such a cooler look.
Anybody else miss wearing their fave hats backwards like we did when we were in elementary school? Gosh I miss the 90s!
Any stories behind your fave baseball cap?
Hello loves! I hope everyone's Monday is going well! I'm headed East to spend some time with family this week and I'm so excited. Any chance I can get to "venture out", I take it! I hope you all are enjoying more of my style posts on here! My traveling is somewhat on hold so I'm trying to give other elements of the blog more attention. Plus, I'm trying very hard to create/publish new, consistent content for you all! Not to mention I've got an exciting project I'm working on which I'll be able to tell you all about towards the end of this month.
But for now, I'm looking to replace some of my older series with something fresh! If you've been reading my blog for any length of time you know on Mondays I usually post a #SimplyMondayMusings post--just things I find online and in life that I like and get my brain working. That kind of fizzled out, so I'm trying a new series, "What's Good?" with you all. It takes a peek into my life and what I'm getting in to on a weekly basis. I hope this makes our blogger-reader relationship more personal and relatable, so here we go!
What I'm Reading...
I just finished Sandcastle Kings this past weekend and really enjoyed it. If you're needing a spiritual rejuvenation, this book by Pastor Rich Wilkerson, Jr. is a definite must! It's easy to read and Pastor Rich is so relatable. I'm currently rotating between Why Not Me? by Mindy Kaling and the literary classic To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. I'm only a few chapters in to Why Not Me? and this book is hilarious! I guess it doesn't help that I'm reading it with Mindy's voice in my mind, huh? And I think it's always a good thing to re-read books you read when you were younger. I remember first picking the book up in junior high, so by reading it again at an older age, it's like reading from a new perspective.
What I'm Eating...
I am slowly finding myself cooking more and more and grabbing take out less and less. Of course the fact that grocery shopping is a little easier on my wallet, but it's actually easier on my digestive system too. I just finished 21 days without junk food and sugary snacks and thought it would be a great idea to have donuts for breakfast--no bueno. I'm learning more and more about what my body likes and doesn't like, so I'm attempting to make more meals at home. The picture above is a chicken thigh over a quinoa & brown rice mix with fresh carrots. I post most of my cooking on snapchat (margggg58) so be sure to follow along!
What I'm Watching...
As if reading Mindy Kaling's book isn't enough, I'm attempting to watch all 4 seasons in the next seven days before my free Hulu promo ends. If you've never watched it, it is insanely funny! SO funny that I'll probably cave and get an actual subscription to Hulu so I can watch the second half of season four this Spring!
What I'm Wanting...
With my birthday right around the corner, I've got my eyes set on these snakeskin print mules from the Truffle Collection. My love for mules is growing more and more and I could absolutely care less whether they're in season or not! I can easily pair these with a little black dress, blue jeans, or even a simple office look. Fingers crossed I can grab them before they sell out!
Have a great day and be sure to visit the blog again tomorrow!
I finally caught on to the whole OTK (over the knee) boot trend and let me tell ya, I am loving it. I mean, what's not to love about them? They practically add two extra inches to the length of your legs! And even though I fluctuate between 5'8" and 5'9" (trust me, spinal compression/decompression makes all the difference) I would kill to be a solid 5'10". Because at that height I could be a Victoria's Secret Angel. Ok, maybe not. But a girl can dream, can't she?
I threw on a simple black top, a fun black & white jacket, a pair of skinny jeans and finished the look with my favorite pair of sunnies--the perfect look for a chilly January morning. I can't wait to pair these OTK boots with a fun dress next!
Have a great Thursday!
Since my travel excursions have been put on hold for a few months I finally have time to share with you all what I deem as travel necessities! I always carry these items with me when I travel and believe me, they have helped me through many flight delays, cross country flights and planes full of chatty Cathys.
Hello loves! I hope you all are having an awesome Sunday so far. I love Sundays. It's the most relaxing day of the week for me. My Sunday routine includes attending the 8:00am church service, a quick hot breakfast once I return home, a mid-morning nap and then watching my Steelers take on their weekly opponent!
