I know what you're thinking-- No cupcake or cookie recipe? Not today my friend. I'm switching things up and sharing what it's been like on the journey to a healthier diet! I'm only a few weeks in but I can already feel a difference.
At the beginning of this year I participated in a 21 day sugar fast and I can definitely tell a difference in the way I eat and digest things now. After the 21 days, it was hard to go back to snacking on sweet things. I no longer had it in me to consume 3 chocolate chip cookies in one sitting. And it wasn't just sweet treats that made me feel off, it was dairy too! My stomach would be in so much pain after I finished a bowl of cereal or ate any type of ice cream or yogurt. So, to make things better on my stomach and put a fresh spring in my step, I'm making an attempt at gradually ditching sugar & dairy!
But here's the thing, when you remove something from your life, diet, or whatever it may be, you have to fill that space with something else. It's not enough to just reduce my artificial sugar or dairy intake alone, I have to fill in those gaps! And I've decided to fill them with lots of fresh fruits & greens, lean proteins, and healthy grains.
I've decided that the quickest and easiest way for me to include ore greens in my diet is by consuming lots of pressed juices and homemade fruit & veggie smoothies. I tend to take the packaged juices with me when I'm on the go on weekends and make my own during the week.
As much as I love breakfast foods (pancakes, cinnamon rolls, bacon!) I can't really stomach anything before 9:00 am. And now that I'm walking/running every morning I have to eat something that provides me with lots of protein! So, I've ditched the pancakes and doubled up on egg whites, added fruit, and whole wheat toast. I add spinach and kale to my eggs for more of a boost.
Lunch and dinner typically look about the same. Lean protein, steamed veggies, and either brown rice and/or quinoa. If I'm feeling lazy, I'll make pasta with a homemade sauce. But don't get me wrong, there are nights when I have a few slices of pizza or a cheeseburger with my family. I just try to limit it to only a few times a month. Plus, I don't believe in denying yourself what you want. For example, if I eat really clean for breakfast and lunch and have a clean dinner planned, I'll definitely have a chocolate chip cookie. I'm also learning to replace my cravings with healthier options! If you want something sweet, try frozen grapes! If you want something sweet for breakfast, try steel cut oats with apple chunks, honey and cinnamon!
Even though I'm making a strong effort to eat healthier, there are always those times when I can't avoid going out to eat. Chipotle will always and forever my first love when it comes to eating out! It's fresh, quick and super filling. I avoid the sour cream, always get brown rice and have recently been adding pico de gallo for more veggies. It's all about being mindful in your selections, but don't forget to enjoy yourself!
It's definitely a journey [that I'm glad I'm on] and no day is the same! I'm in no way looking to lose weight, instead I'm looking to treat my body better. Do your research, talk with your doctor, and get started! I'll be posting more in-depth pics and recipes of my healthy dishes!
